Fazile Zahir

A chance conversation on a beach in North Cyprus introduced Fazile to the English editor of the Community Post/ Toplum Postasi.  Six months of writing for them convinced her that writing was what she loved.  A business deal that fell through gave her the opportunity to start writing for Cyprus Today on a weekly basis: A writing philosophy developed, she decided that she wouldn't write about Kurds, Armenian genocide or freedom of speech in Turkey as all of these topics were over egged by all the other commentators on Turkey.  Instead she tries to show the human face of Turkish life, what makes the Turkish news and what the Average Joe is likely to be talking about.....rather than what politicians are pontificating upon.  On the strength of that alternative view she was offered a fortnightly column at the Asia Times (entitled Kebabble) and freelances as a features writer for Turkish daily Today’s Zaman.  If her best intentions are realised the rest of the world will come to realise that Turkey is a complex, brilliant and occasionally hilarious country.
